Ronia- Discussion Director

For this Literacy Circle meeting, my job was the discussion director. These are the questions which I came up with:

1.   To who do you think the journal which Ben wrote was meant for?
- I think the journal was written for Salamanca because Ben hangs out with her a lot.
- I think the journal was written for either Salamanca of Phoebe because Ben might like either of them.
- I think it was for Salamanca because Ben loves Salamanca and he kissed her o the ear.

2.   What do you think this message means: We never know the worth of water until the well is dry?
- I think that it means that we never know the qualities of life until they are taken away.
- I think it means to conserve water.
- I think it means that we never know the worth of objects until they are gone.

3.   Did anything surprise you about this section of the book?
- Yes. It surprised me that Phoebe and Salamanca were gathering more and more clues and getting more messages.
- It surprised me that Phoebe and Salamaca found out more about the lunatic including his name.

4.   What do you think is going to happen next?
- I think that it will turn out that the lunatic isn't a lunatic after all.
- I think that it be clear of who wrote the strange messages.

5.   What is your favorite part of the book so far?
- I like the part where the teacher reads the journals because of all of the emotions going on.
- I like the part where the teacher reads the poem because it really is a poem to think about.

Nini - Connector

Connector
I was Connector for Chapter 27-36, in the book, when Salamanca was helping Phoebe to lug her suitcase and asked her if she has been upset lately. I think that it was a weird conversation. Once, my friends helped me take my suitcases and we had a very weird conversation on our feelings.

Group Mates Connection of this section:
  • Sofia: When the teacher was reading the poem to the class, I remembered a time when my English teacher read a poem about the sea.
  • Ronia: When the teacher was reading the sea poem, I thought of when I was at the beach and the waves were 1-2 meters high and I almost drowned.
  • Lovisa: I sometimes write my own short journals just like Ben does.
For June 10th, we are reading till the end of the book. I am the Vocab Enricher.

Artful Artist- Lovisa

Artful Artist- Lovisa

I was the Artful Artist this discussion and the picture that I drew was a question mark that represented that Pheobe did not know where her mom was. So they were going to the police office and found out that the son of the police officer was the lunatic.

Ronia's guess: Ronia guessed the picture correctly.

Nini's guess: Nini thought that the picture represented when Pheobe and Sal was on the phone. But they were not.

Sofia's guess: Sofia thought that it was what Pheobe was thinking or what was going on in her head.

Sofia-Literary Luminary

For this Literacy Circle meeting, my job was the Literary Luminary. I was supposed to find sentences that I fund funny, interesting, important, etc..

1. The day returns, but nevermore Returns the traveler to the shore. And the tide rises, the tide falls. This is the poem Mr. Birkway read to the class. I chose this because after he reads it, Phoebe says the tide is like a murderer/lunatic, who killed the traveler. This is important because it shows how much Phoebe really misses her mom.

2. I don't know what came over me. I was going to kiss him. I leaned forward just as he turned around and slammed the door of his locker. My lips ended up pressed against the cold, metal locker. This part is very important in the book. It shows that even though Sal kept denying she liked Ben, she does have a crush on him after all.

3.  Phoebe said. Leaning against the back of the sofa was an enormous sword. Phoebe examined the blade. 'Careful you don't cut yourself,' Mrs. Partridge said.
I chose this part because even though Mrs. Partridge is blind, she knows exactly what is going on, who is in the room and how old a stranger is. It is almost as if she has a sixth sense, which is very weird.

4. We never know the worth of water until the well is dry.

I chose this because I found it very deep, because it basically means: "We never appreciate something until it is gone." This is something most people do, which is why I chose to add it in here.
