Summerizer

My job this time was to be the Summerizer for this part of the book. My group has read 262 pages of the 280 page in the book, so this means I will be summarizing the part of the book that we read this time.

The part of the story that we read this time starts with Sal and her grandparents heading towards the Black Hills. They went to see Mt. Rushmore and the carvings of the presidents. After that, they went to Wyoming and Gram was eager to visit Yellowstone. Sal continued on with her Phoebe story and she tells her grandparents about the part where Mr. Birkway reads the poem. At this point, the story was at the part where Phoebe and Sal go to the police station and tell the police officer about the clues and the notes that were sent. Phoebe still doesn't give up even though the police officer thinks that that was a joke. At school, Mr. Birkway is continuing reading the stories and the journals. Almost everyone is embarrassed. Back to Sal's life again, Gram is very exited to see Old Faithful erupt. She steps in front of the rope and watches it erupt close up. Sal continued her story about Phoebe and told Gram and Gramps about the part where she travels with Phoebe to Mark's university. Mark is the guy that Phoebe's mother went to see. When Phoebe and Sal got there they first couldn't see Mark and her mom, but after they saw Mark and her mom kissing. This bothered Phoebe quite a lot. Phoebe was not very pleased when her sister Predunce told her that their mom is coming home, neither was she too exited for her moms' arrival. In the next chapter, Sal finished the story about Phoebe and from then on we read and find out more about Sal's life and mother. Sal wanted to drive up and down the curvy roads to see where the buss that her mother was in crashed. She meets a guy who tells her more about the crash and that there was only one survive, but it was not Sal's mother. 

This was all we read this time. Hope you enjoyed reading this as much as i enjoy reading this book (which is a lot)!

HI guys,
I am today Discussion Director, the discussion director has to think of questions for our group about the amount we have read this time.  So here are the questions and mine and there answers:

  1. How do you think she felt when she found out that her teacher is Mrs.Cadaver's brother?
  • My answer: I think that she was ashamed and disappointed that he wont marry Mrs. Cadaver. 
  • A: I think that she felt shocked, embarrassed, ashamed that they thought that she was a murder. 
     2. Do you think that it was a good idea for Mr. Birkway to read out the journals out load?
  • My answer: I think that it was a very bad idea for him to read them out load because it hearts peoples feelings and it's their private thoughts. 
  • C: It can be very embarrassing, so it's a bad idea.
     3. Why do you think the grandma wanted to see  Old Faithful so much? 
  • My answer: Maybe because she has been wanting to see it since she was little or every time she cam it wasn't the right time.
  • C: I think that grandparents went there before but they never saw it erupt.
     4.What do you think the man wanted to say when he kept in saying " Aww..... Its that all.... ( he was saying that to old faithful?
  • My answer: Maybe the geyser when when it first shot out it might of spit out some mud.
  • A: Maybe he was trying to say that he was disappointed.
     5. Why do you think that Beth Anne was calling her to kill the bug?
  • My answer: Maybe because she is from the country so she is used to that.
  • A: Because it said in the begging of the book that she was very brave for killing a spider.

Literary Luminary - Cody

My job this time  was to choose a paragraph or sentences from the book to discuss with my group.  So, I chose five very touching, surprising and, interesting sentences and paragraph's.  After every one there will be what the people in my group thought of it.  My group has read 262 pages of the 280 page in the book.

1. Page 234 Paragraph 3
Every time I was with him now my skin tickled and my brain buzzed and my blood romped around as if it were percolating.

This is in the part of the story when Pheobe and Salamanca are looking for the "lunatic".

"I thought it was weird but a very good description because I could imagine me feeling the same thing", thought Cody.
"Sal is in love", thought Anka.

2. Page 238 Paragraph 4
If there had been a vase, we would have squashed it, because our heads moved completely together and our lips landed on the right places which was on the other person's lips. It was a real kiss and it didn't taste like chicken.

This is the part where Sal kisses Ben and concludes that his kisses do not taste like chicken.

"It makes me sick", thought Ashley.
"It is totally PG 13", thought Cody.

3. Page 240 Paragraph 4
If I could toss rocks like you can toss rocks, I'd have plonked them both in the back of the heads.

This is the part when Pheobe is telling Sal about her seeing her mother with the "lunatic".

"Pheobe is a very violent little girl", thought Cody.
"I agree but it is also written in a simple way but full of meaning of expression", thought Ashley.

4. Page 248 Paragraph 1 and 2
Mrs. Winterbottom said, "Mike is my son."
Mr. Winterbottom, Prudence, Pheobe, and I all said, "Your son?"

This is the part when Pheobe's mother comes back home but with the "lunatic" and tells them that he is her son from a previous marriage.

"It is not surprising that they find it shocking but it is quite weird to here that after Pheobe saw her mother with the lunatic (Mike)", thought Cody.
"That is very boring", thought Ashley.

5. Page 256 Paragraph 3
"Sonny, I've been by her side for 51 years, except for the three days she left me for the egg man.  I'm holding onto her hand, see?  If you wan't me to let go, you'll have to chop my hand off."

This is the part when Sal's grandmother is in the hospital after she had a stroke and the doctor told the grandfather that she couldn't hear him.

"The grandfather is a very brave and kind man and what he said was very touching", thought Cody.
"He was very sweet and a bit aggressive", thought Anka.
"Oh, that was very sweet", thought Ashley.

Discussion Director

This meeting, my job was to be the Discussion Director. I came up with questions for my group to answer. After having our meeting today, this is what we came up with. We read 204 out of 280 pages. 

1. Why did Sal tell her father about Phoebe's mother missing when Phoebe clearly said she wasn't supposed to?
She wanted to inform her dad about Phoebe's mother and that Phoebe has gone through the same thing.


2. How did Mrs. Portridge become blind?
She was maybe born blind, or she got it as she got older. Another reason why she might have became blind is maybe someone sprayed spray paint or any other liquid in her eyes. 


3. Why was Phoebe acting so snobby?
She was probably really depressed because of the event with her mother or she was just trying to get more attention.


4. Why was Phoebe so sensitive about cholesterol?
She probably got that sensitivity from her mother, or she grew into the habit of mentioning it and correcting people about it. She could've had a past bad experience with cholesterol.

                     My job this time was to choose quotes, sentences, or paragraphs from what we read. Something that made me feel an emotion or something that was funny, depressing, or powerful. I was also supposed to record the page and paragraph. I asked other people about what they felt about some of my quotes.


  1.  My first sentence that I picked was ".....you're trying to catch fish in the air. Your mother is not coming back.". It was on page 115, paragraph three.                                                                                            When I read this, I felt that this was the truth and it made me feel as if I was in her place, thinking that my own mother was never going to come back. It reminded me of my own loss which I wish not to explain. 
  2. My second sentence was "People usually come back.". It was on page 128, paragraph two.                                This made me feel sort of shocked because it went against what Sal's father said previously. 
  3. This third one really made me think because of its wording. It was " A person isn't a bird. You can't cage a person.", on page 141, second paragraph.                                                                                              To me, it makes me think then, is it right to cage even a bird? Don't all living animals wish to be free at times? I had a tricky, (not hard), time answering due to what it may actually mean.
  4. This fourth one really made my teeth seethe. "Cholesterol," Phoebe said. "Chol-es-ter-ol.In the butter." "Ah." Mrs. Finney said. "Cholesterol." She looked at her husband. "Be careful, dear. There's cholesterol on the beans." It was on page 159, paragraph two. By the time I read this page, I had laughed, and fumed at the same time. Phoebe's actions and words just made me feel so flustered. Jana liked it because it seemed to describe Phoebe's description a bit more. Everyone else hated it and entirely believed she was just plain mean.
  5. Last but not least...."The whispers walloped me. "rush, rush, rush." This was on page 177, paragraph four. I just loved the wording because even though it was just a sentence, it seemed to have much more meaning. It described what Sal was feeling almost. Jana thought it to be the wording that makes it seem mysterious and Cody thought it to sound wise.
So that was it. I wanted to do a lot more but hope you enjoyed!  :)

HI guys, 

             I was this time illustrator  and I thought that this part of the book is really important because, this is when they are going to the police officer because Phoebe thinks that her mom has been kidnapped. Though the true reason is her mom ran away. Also they find out that the police officers son is one of their suspects. So they don’t believe the police man when he said that they are being ridicules. So they think he is lying.  

The picture is of the police officer listening to their story to how Phoebe's mom got kidnapped. The page on which they described the officer and which I drawed a picture of is 184.

Illustrator


With being discussion director my job is to draw some kind of a picture related to what I read in the section.  Out of everything I chose the scene when Salamanca's (the girl that takes up half of the paper) grandfather chooses to take a detour to this little place called the Pipestone National Monument in Pipestone, Minnesota.  This very picture is just them walking up to the monument when Sal see's the Native Americans, or American Indian as they like to call them selves, thunking away at the stone in the quarry after they have parked.  This scene in the book is also when Sal (a short name for Salamanca) tries smoking through a stone pipe (I found that kind of weird).  In our group discussion nobody could guess what time and place this was in the story so I thought and said to myself 'I should have added more details and that would make it easier for them to guess.

Literary Luminary ~ Literature Circles

I didn't quite understand what I was supposed to do in this job, so I tried my best to do it fully.
I was supposed to pick paragraphs or sentences that are funny, interesting, strange etc.

1. "It was hotter than blazes in South Dakota."
    I chose this sentence because I find the description of the weather and the temperature very interesting and I like the fact that the author compared the temperature with something else (which also made it more interesting).
~ Blazes are usually things that are very hot, burning (most times blazes are fires)

2. "In the course of a lifetime, why does it matter?"
    I chose to write this sentence down because I think it is very powerful and very deep. The reason why this sentence is so powerful because it shows deep thought and deep emotions. Due to the fact that people have many different beliefs and opinions, there isn't really the right answer to this question.

3. "Next Mrs. Cadaver slashed and sliced at a pitiful rosebush that had been trying to creep up the side of her house."
    I chose this sentence because I found it really entertaining because of the description of Mrs. Cadaver's action. I also like the words the author used for the rosebush and Mrs. Cadaver. The way the author described the way the rosebush was "creeping" up the side of the house was also very interesting and different.

4. "Mr. Brikway bounded around the room as if the opportunity to teach us was his notion of paradise."
    I chose this one because I think it is serious yet the author wrote it in a silly and funny way. I really liked this sentence because it kind of teases Mr. Brikway in a way that wouldn't be so obvious in the first place.

               My job that I chose to do this time was the Discussion Director. My job was to list questions about the book (the part of which we were supposed to read) then answer it. When meeting together As a group, we discussed about this and then I told of my answers. Not everyone answered all the questions. Hope this won't be too dull?

1) I wonder what Phoebe's reaction would be if Ben kissed her collar bone?                                                                                                                                                                                                
    I answered that she would probably call him a lunatic and run away making horror stories about him, seeing as how she see's almost everyone a lunatics. 
Cody and Anka both had similar ideas of Phoebe calling him a leech to slapping him and making up a terrorist story.

2) Why did Ben kiss Sal on collar bone? Why not on her cheek? 

   I thought since it said Sal turned around, he probably missed. Sounding much stranger out loud. 
Jana believed that Ben was too short which also may have been a possibility if he wasn't sitting down.

3) Who put the notes on Phoebe's porch and who is it meant for?

   Since the potential lunatic seems the most guiltiest it's probably not him. As in most books, the guiltiest is never guilty. I guess it could be Ben seeing that there's more to his story as well. Maybe, he might actually like her! 
Cody thought that it may be Sal's mother trying to explain about her going away, but not wanting her father to know.

4) Why was it that Sal never thought of anything else while telling of Phoebe's story?

    I think that maybe it was because Phoebes story was her story but she was talking of someone else as to not focus on herself. 
Cody believed that maybe Phoebe's life seemed more interesting to Sal then hers.

5) Why didn't Sal's mother return?

   I know it deep somewhere that Salamanca's mother didn't return for a more simple yet tragic reason that I wish not to state. 
Anka believes that maybe she was kidnapped and Cody thought that she found love in someone else!
